ABOUT

Janet brings a huge breadth and depth of media law and Ofcom experience, having advised TV producers and broadcasters on their content play over many years, including on Marcoms issues such as promos, programme-related material, and broadcast competitions.

EXPERIENCE

Before joining ABBAS, Janet worked for ten years in-house as a Content Lawyer for Channel 5 and the ViacomCBS channels in the UK. Before joining Channel 5, she spent two years working for Ofcom, investigating and adjudicating upon Fairness and Privacy complaints. For nearly nine years Janet also lectured on media law to NCTJ students around her 9 to 5 commitments. Prior to this, the majority of her professional career was involved with acting for, and advising, regional and national newspapers.

At Channel 5, Janet was involved in all aspects of legal and compliance and litigationadvice to the business, both pre- and post-broadcast. This included liaising with production companies and commissioning editors during the production process, reviewing programme documentation, viewing and advising on programmes prior to broadcast (including as-liveand live), advising about repeats on the various platforms, and dealing with complaints following broadcast.  Janet has worked on a huge number of programmes across all genres including investigative and current affairs programmes.

WHEN NOT WORKING

Janet is avidly adding to her art collection … as much as her walls will allow. When the weather permits, she can be found in the garden, with a drink and her head in a good book.
