Business affairs lawyer/advisor (television)

Abbas Media Law is currently looking for a junior business affairs lawyer – solicitor or barrister – with 1+ years PQE to join our growing and dynamic team. Based in Central London, this business affairs role is offered on a full time, permanent basis.

ABBAS Media Law

ABBAS Media Law is a niche, specialist law firm, working principally in the television, VOD, film and publishing industries. They are experts in all aspects of the law and regulations affecting these sectors and advise many of the UK’s leading independent production companies, broadcasters, and other content producers.

The Successful Candidate:

The successful applicant will join a small team of lawyers and advisers working with the firm’s clients principally on television business affairs and production services-related matters. In addition, there is scope to train in other areas of media law e.g. media content advice and litigation.  This is a fantastic opportunity to work with and be trained by some of the most experienced and sought-after media lawyers and advisors in the business.

Requirements:

You will be a qualified solicitor or barrister who has:

  • Some media contracts law experience in the UK television industry, preferably including experience of drafting and negotiating some or all of the following:
    • contributor, talent and underlying rights agreements;
    • broadcaster/commissioner, financier, co-production agreements; and
    • distribution agreements.
  • a practical understanding of the process of television production, preferably gained as an in-house lawyer at a television production company or broadcaster

Qualification and Skills

  • at least 1 years+ post qualified experience;
  • an excellent academic record, and excellent written, research and presentational skills;
  • the ability to work efficiently on competing projects and under pressure, working to tight deadlines;
  • enthusiasm, dynamism, be self-motivated and have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • a keen interest in the television and media industries and be someone eager to take on new challenges.

  • Annual Leave: 25 days + bank holidays + plus 1 day a year up to a max of 30 days + bank holidays.

Experience

  • Media law experience, including hands-on experience of defamation, privacy and copyright laws. Some litigation experience is desirable but not essential;
  • Experience in advising on media content issues, preferably in the television and/or on-demand sectors, including some experience of the application of Ofcom’s codes;
  • A practical understanding of the process of television production, preferably gained as an in-house lawyer at a television production company or broadcaster.
